January 18, 2009 - The Writer's Tablet

Journal Activity (prose) for character development:

Think about your favorite section of the grocery store. Begin a list of items that you would find in that section. Your first list should be very basic (apples, lettuce, peppers). List items consistently for about five minutes. Return to the top of the list and write the following qualities about each item:

How does it smell?
How does it look (colors, cleanliness, etc.)?
How does it feel?
How does it sound when you pick it up or drop it in the cart?
How does it taste?

Once you have finished your list, think of five to ten people you know and compare each of them to one item on the list.

Finally, write a short skit using your five characters that is set at the check-out line of the grocery store. The conflict should center around their order in the check-out line.

The skit part of this is scaring me but I won't let that stop me, dammit! Now if I can just figure out where in the grocery is my favorite section. The "Out" door? Ha.

Well, yeah, the skit is kind of the extension activity. Creating the list and qualities is the main activity. You can skip the skit. LOL

This seems pretty cool; just one favorite section, eh? That's the hard part for me. Are we going to share or is this just for ourselves?

Ruth: I suppose it's optional. It would be fun to try some of these and then get together and share our favorite results. Maybe we could do that every week or two. We could shoot for completing two or three exercises, and then meet up for coffee. Anyone could come along. Let's do it!

Yes, let's. I still don't know what my fave grocery store section is, but it's on my mind.

Aha! I just re-read the directions for this and made myself read past the word "skit" (shudder) and realized that the stuff in the checkout line is my favorite. All that candy, the magazines and tabloids, the last minute sundries, gift cards, books, and soft drinks (cokes in my world, but nobody lives in that world anymore). All the junk that I don't really need or maybe I just forgot that I need it. And just think of the conflict when I get into the express lane then start loading up on checkout line crap, causing my item number to soar way over 15. Heh. I'm on it!

Lordy. The desriptions (I'm leaving this misspelling - it's so appropriate to my drunken state) of just the candy are taking up pages! What a cool blog post this will be (though I may feel different about this in the morning). Ugh, the morning. It's 11:30? wtf?!?

Ooooh, someone has got the bug. I'm glad you like the exercise. I think a song or post from this one might be perfect. I said skit because I think in terms of dialogue, but what a funny song it could make. My section is the produce...mmmm, apples.
